He added: “The insurance industry clearly are not using the information in the data, which is a consistent series of dialogues and messages we’ve had with that industry for the last six months. They are very slow to respond to data.”
Mardell requires extra action to shield motorists
Mardell added that JLR was taking a string of action to proceed reducing car theft in a bid to reassure homeowners and the insurance coverage market.
“We know how upsetting somebody losing a vehicle will be. We’ve had employees whose vehicles have been stolen. I’ve had friends whose vehicles have been stolen. We know how upsetting this is. So we’re doing more than just [making safer] new vehicles: you have to differentiate between the current ones being built and the existing car parc.”
Last November, JLR launched a £10 million fund to introduce safety updates for round 200,000 autos it constructed between 2018 and 2022. Mardell stated 80,000 autos had now acquired the enhancements and that “theft rates for those are as low as for new vehicles”.
The agency will quickly broaden that programme to pre-2018 automobiles, and it’ll finally cowl 450,000 autos, though Mardell acknowledged that velocity of supply was a difficulty, as a result of most of the automobiles included are onto second or third homeowners.
“We know this technology means stealing a Range Rover, stealing a Defender, stealing a Discovery and stealing a Jaguar is not possible,” he stated.
Government action wanted to lower organised car crime
Mardell cited different actions JLR was taking, including: “We’re working with the federal government on the Criminal Justice Bill. This expertise [used by vehicle thieves] shouldn’t be unlawful, in order that’s received to change. We’ve received to make it tougher for gangs and criminals to function.
“We’re partly funding police safety on the ports, as a result of there is not sufficient. The containers will not be being checked and [stolen cars] get overseas. If we may cease it there, then the power for these gangs to do that will probably be restricted.
