Three high court judges take oath after elevation to SC

ISLAMABAD: Three high court judges, together with the chief justices of Sindh and Lahore high courts, Tuesday took oath as Supreme Court judges after their elevation was notified by theMinistry of Law and Justice.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa administered oath to LHC Chief Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan, SHC Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, andLHC Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan.
The oath-taking ceremony was held on the apex court at present.
A day earlier, the regulation and justice ministry notified the appointments of the aforementioned high court judges to the SC following the approval of President Asif Ali Zardari underneath Article 177.
After LHC Chief Justice Shahzad’s elevation, Justice Shujaat Ali Khan was appointed as appearing LHC CJ by President Zardari underneath Article 196, in accordance to a notification issued by the regulation ministry.
Justice Shujaat will carry out duties as appearing LHC CJ till the appointment to the highest put up, it additional acknowledged.

Of 9 members of the fee, 4 JCP members, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice (retd) Manzoor Ahmed Malik, opposed the elevation of the LHC chief justice to the Supreme Court, whereas CJP Isa, Justice Amin-ud-Din, Azam Tarar, AG Mansoor Usman Awan and PBC consultant Akhtar Hussain voted in favour of Justice Shahzad’s elevation.
It is pertinent to point out right here that the power of Supreme Court judges was 14 earlier in contrast to the constitutional power of 17, due to which the three new jurors had to appointed.
Three posts of Supreme Court judges fell vacant after the retirement of former chief justice Umar Ata Bandial and resignations of Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi.
