Patrick Bamford says Leeds fans turned up at his house after penalty miss in Newcastle game last season

Patrick Bamford says Leeds United fans turned up outdoors his house after he missed a penalty towards Newcastle United in May 2023.

Bamford, 30, added that he needed to deactivate his Twitter account just a few months earlier than the incident as a result of “the abuse got so bad — threatening my family and even my little girl”.

The game towards Newcastle was on May 13, with Bamford lacking a 28th-minute penalty which might have seen Leeds take a 2-0 lead at Elland Road. Newcastle then went 2-1 up thanks to 2 profitable penalties from Callum Wilson, earlier than Rasmus Kristensen equalised late on.

Leeds had been then relegated from the Premier League after defeats towards West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, having spent three seasons again in the highest flight.

Bamford, talking on the BBC’s My Mate’s A Footballer podcast, recollects that his associate phoned him after the Newcastle game and informed him there have been folks outdoors his house who had not moved for “20 minutes”.

“As I turn into the drive to get in, I can’t even get to the gate, there’s two cars blocking it,” Bamford stated.

“They had their home windows open. I went to place my window down and as I did, they put their home windows open and simply stared at me. Then the gate opened as a result of my dad had opened it and so they drove off.

“I think it was a culmination of the last few weeks. I took a lot of flak for it, rightly or wrongly. The way they expressed it was crazy.”

Bamford added that his associate didn’t really feel secure in their residence following the incident and he needed to name on his private sports activities psychologist for assist.

“I rang him (Bamford’s sports psychologist) literally straight after that happened,” Bamford continued. “He was like, ‘How do you feel?’

“I stated, ‘I’m not upset in regards to the abuse, I’m indignant that somebody’s come to the house and achieved that’. The membership had been good, they ended up placing safety on the house for the entire evening.

“I was like, ‘How do I explain to Michaela — don’t worry, everything’s safe’, even though we’re sitting there with security and a security dog outside the house all night.”

The day after the Newcastle game, Leeds launched an announcement condemning on-line abuse and threats Bamford had acquired following his missed penalty.

Bamford stays at Leeds and has scored 4 targets in 23 appearances this season for the Championship membership.
