Aniela Sobieski is intrigued by “the human impulse to self-decorate,” a fascination that permeates each facet of her portraiture. Evoking each baroque work and modern fashions, Sobieski adorns ladies and the occasional canine with elaborate make-up and sculptural equipment positioned conspicuously to masks the topic’s options. She seamlessly maps basic nonetheless lifes and sparse landscapes instantly onto the sitter’s face, typically highlighting the pure form of the attention and coating the determine’s lips in daring pink.

Apparent inside Sobieski’s oil work is a symbiotic relationship between the topic and their lavish equipment: whereas a pair of daisies or bucolic scene function expressions of id and emotion, the topic “provides them with an environment,” the artist writes. “It is my hope that these relationships speak to the tendency for nature and the human psyche to mirror each other.”
