Post Office latest: Inquiry hearing from former Horizon director David Miller

Looking on the case of sub-postmistress Julie Wolstenholme, we see from emails that as a result of finance director Peter Corbett was on vacation, details about the case was escalated to Miller.

Miller interrupts Price as she reads out the phrase “escalate” from the e-mail – he argues that Corbett was employed on the similar degree as he and so, really, this could have gone above him and he ought to have queried it on the time.

He is requested why he did not.

“Because I was dealing with it at speed and I signed it off,” he replies.

In his witness assertion, Miller says he didn’t learn authorized recommendation referring to the case and says “I very much regret” not giving it nearer consideration.

In the assertion, Miller says of a gathering with ex-head of safety Tony Marsh: “He instructed me there was a problem with the professional recommendation which had led our counsel to say the [Post Office] case was unlikely to succeed. It was clear that he didn’t assume a lot of the professional.

“The view was that we should cut our losses and pay up.”

The assertion goes on: “Knowing what I now find out about Horizon and the best way it was used to wrongly prosecute and convey civil claims towards sub-postmasters, I very a lot remorse not studying the professional’s report and counsel’s recommendation.

“Had I done so I would have taken action to address the issues raised. I acknowledge that by not reading them there was a missed opportunity.”
