Upper East Side Galleries Celebrate Historic Members of the National Association of Women Artists

After collectively presenting a present of 1913 Armory Show exhibition artists this previous fall, Lincoln Glenn and Graham Shay 1857 return this spring with a collaborative exhibition to acknowledge the contributions of some of the hundreds of girls artists who have been members of National Association of Women Artists (NAWA). Founded in 1889, the group is the oldest girls artists’ collective in the United States, offering a neighborhood for skilled girls artists and selling the work of its members via annual exhibitions, touring reveals, awards, and academic and outreach applications. Throughout its illustrious historical past, NAWA’s membership has included the likes of Bessie Potter Vonnoh, Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, Jane Peterson, Ida O’Keeffe, Isabel Bishop, Doris Lee, Dorothy Dehner, Louise Nevelson, Agnes Pelton, Anna Walinska, and Cecilia Beaux in its ranks, all of whom are represented in the exhibition.

Just as Virginia Woolf believed that ladies authors wanted a modest wage and a room of their very own to write down fiction, girls artists have looked for a spot to exhibit their work and a gaggle of their friends to offer creative and mental help. The National Association of Women Artists, initially referred to as the Woman’s Art Club of New York, was based by 5 girls who felt remoted from a neighborhood of their friends and from the alternative to exhibit their artwork. They supplied girls with a substitute for the male-dominated National Academy of Design and Society of American Artists in New York, which continued to bar girls from collaborating in lots of life drawing and anatomy lessons, gaining governing positions, and exhibiting their artwork at annual exhibitions.

The exhibition will run from March 28 via May 31, with the area open to guests 10am–6pm, Monday–Friday.
